So, Ryan Adams has sobered up and released a record. At least the recent New York Times article I read says he’s been sober for about a year. What do we get with sober Adams? A pretty good record actually. The one, two (pun intended) punch of “Goodnight Rose” and “Two” get Easy Tiger off to a cranking start showcasing Adams at his best. The former rocking out with while the latter slows it down for a nice AAA radio hit featuring backing vocals from Sheryl Crowe.Â
Other solid tunes on the short disc (most songs clocking in somewhere near the 3:00 minute mark) include, “Off Broadway” in which Adams channels Neil Young and “Tears of Gold,” which is solid country gold and could have easily been featured on Adams’ Jacksonville City Nights. While “Halloween Head” sticks in your head like one of those damn songs from the Sound of Music, its easily my least favorite lyrically.Â
Personally I’m pleased with the record and with early listens rank it up there with Heartbreaker. Here’s hoping for another strong release from Adams later this year.Â
