The 2007 Musical Eclipse

Tuesday, July 10, 2007 By Mayer Danzig

About once a year the earth, sun and moon align and a plethora of great new music arrives on a single day. In 2007 that day is July 10th.

album coverJason Isbell, Sirens of the Ditch (New West Records)
The former Drive-By Trucker rolls on to great success. Isbell’s tunes were among my favorites on the last few Truckers releases. From the emotional war commentary “Dress Blues” to the rocking “Try” its clear that the best is yet to come.

Crowded House, Time on Earth (ATO Records)
Neil Finn is a songwriter’s songwriter, consistently turning out clever and intelligent pop songs. His songs are the perfect blend of an infectious melody with a musical complexity that rewards repeated listening. After several solo outings, Finn has reunited with bassist Nick Seymour and revived the Crowded House name.

album coverBuffalo Tom, Three Easy Pieces (New West Records)
The ragged guitar sound and raw energy of Buffalo Tom return after a nearly ten year absence. Three Easy Pieces burgeons with the authenticity and earnestness that are the band’s hallmark. It was worth the wait but, guys, please don’t make us wait another ten years for the next one.

The Gourds, Noble Creatures (Yep Roc Records)
What can one say about a band whose motto is “music for the unwashed and well read?” Whether playing bluegrass or country or heartland roots rock, the Gourds infuse their music with a sense of humor and fun. This is a guaranteed Twangville party favorite.

album coverSpoon, Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga (Merge Records)
As they emerge from cult status to find broader market success, Austin’s Spoon continue to deliver angular pop songs with a proper Beatles-esque touch on tracks like “You Got Yr. Cherry Bomb.” The band’s signature sound is acoustic-based with a percussive edge.

And finally Danzig will be releasing an album of lost tracks. Who could ask for more?
