Imagine gathering a group of old age pensioners to record a classic rock song in the legendary Abbey Road Studios. Meet the Zimmers. With an average age of 78 (with some centenarians in the mix!), the band formed as part of a BBC documentary profiling the treatment of the elderly.
Under the direction of U2 producer Mike Hedges, the band delivers a powerhouse performance. In the accompanying video they parody the icons of classic rock: display white signs a la Dylan’s Subterranean Homesick Blues (“Don’t write me off ‘cos I’m 90”), re-create the street-crossing photo on the Beatles Abbey Road album cover and smash instruments like, well, the Who. Daltrey and Townsend never looked this good.
