Matthew Sweet’s 1991 album Girlfriend burst through like a breath of fresh air. During a time when grunge ruled the airwaves and Nirvana was leading the charge, Sweet took the roughness of grunge and married it with southern California harmonies and pop sensibilities.
Sweet has quietly reemerged in recent years, most notably collaborating with Susanna Hoffs (“Sid ‘n’ Suzie“) and with the Thorns, his trio with Pete Droge and Shawn Mullins. Yet these collaborations haven’t been able to capture the electricity of his earlier output.
But there is hope on the horizon! Sweet has posted a sonic collage of new songs on his mySpace page. If you can ignore the bombastic voice-over, you’ll hear what could be the album that we’ve all been craving. Release date has yet to be set, but here’s hoping it is soon.
