Man oh man, if there is one live show to see this month it’s G. Love. He played two nights in a row down here in lovely St. Petersburg, and I was lucky enough to catch the second night. I must admit, I was coming from work and missed the first song, but hearing “Can’t Go Back To Jersey” as I walked toward the venue was all it took to get me inside as quickly as possible. They played a lot of stuff from the new album, Lemonade, but not everything, and they threw in quite a few of their ‘classics’. I personally loved hearing “Holla!” as well as “Thanks & Praise” (both from Lemonade).
Then they really got me going with “Stepping Stones” (from Yeah, It’s That Easy) and “Baby’s Got Sauce” (from their self-titled debut). The night was nothing but good music and some outstanding jams and I thought it simply could not get any better. That’s (of course) precisely when it did. I heard the drummer counting off, and it sounded vaguely familiar, but I couldn’t quite place it. The instant the bass dropped in, I think my heart stopped. They were playing “Low Rider”. They were covering War’s “Low Rider”. One of my favorite songs ever, a song I love for no logical reason and that I always get ripped on for loving and here G. Love was giving me all kinds of validation. So take that, kids, along with your tickets and your dancing shoes and go see this show. It promises a good time, great talent, and one of the happiest crowds you will ever see. Enjoy.
