Allison Moorer, Getting Somewhere (Sugar Hill)
This is a slight departure from her last album, The Duel. At first I was a little concerned when I heard she was going in a different direction because I really love the tough rock found in that album. It definitely is a little different with more radio friendly pop particularly in the songs “Work to Do” and “Fairweather”. I’m partial to the tride and true Americana sound found in “You’ll Never Know”, “New Years Day” and several of the other tracks. Luckily, the quantity of these songs outweighs the popier stuff. Regardless, expect Moorer to get some notice out of this album as it is more digestible for the masses. All in all, I think it is a great work and she’ll get plenty of recognition for it. Put it on and keep it on repeat. Start with: “New Year’s Day”, also check out: “You’ll Never Know”, “How She Does It”, “Where You Are”, “Getting Somewhere”
Keb Mo, Suitcase (Epic)
Plain and simple, the best Blues effort I’ve heard so far this year. I’ve got to see Keb Mo live before one of us leaves the planet. Start with: “Eileen”, also check out: “The Itch”, “Remain Silent”, “Rita”, “Whole ‘Nutha Thang”
Sonic Youth, Rather Ripped (Geffen)
Not to knock their contributions to experimental rock n’ roll, but I prefer when Sonic Youth keeps it simple. Albums like Daydream Nation and Goo really resonated for me back in the day. Thankfully, “Rather Ripped” harkens back to that time. Highly enjoyable. Start with: “Incinerate”, also check out: “Reena”, “Sleepin’ Around” & “What a Waste”
