Phoenix – “It’s Never Been Like That”

Monday, May 22, 2006 By Sarah Davis

Phoenix has lived up to it’s name.  Previously known as a French electronica band with American-pop influences, they have started anew with a more rock-influenced sound.  It’s Never Been Like That is an appropriate title for an inventive new song set.  It’s definitely not the same old Phoenix, but you can hear their energy carrying over from previous works. Listen to ‘Consolation Prizes’, from their new album, which comes out today.

Frontman Thomas Mars says on the band’s website that “This was about starting all over.  It was about making ourselves scared again.”  Their fear gave birth to something fresh and vibrant.  This album is, above all else, vigorous and joyful, a must-have for what promises to be a summer of musical fun.
