In the better late than never category, here are my picks from last week’s class of new releases.
Sail Away: The Songs of Randy Newman, Various Artists   Â
Although he lives in Los Angeles and has built a unparalleled (and Oscar-rich) career writing scores for films scoring films, Randy Newman’s early years were spent writing short simple songs that captured the complexities of Southern life. On this tribute disc, several comtemporary Southern artists pay their respects. The best of the bunch include Steve Earle’s take on “Rednecks†and Guster’s “Memo to my Son.â€Â
Paul Simon returns with a breath-taking new album produced by Brian Eno. Simon’s lyrics are as quizzical yet profound as ever, but Eno packages them in an ethereal yet minimalist package. The result is Simon’s most rewarding album in years. Visit Simon’s web site to stream samples from the album.
St. Elsewhere, Gnarls Barkley
All the rage in England, this duo is making its move in the States. Fresh from his work with cartoon legends Gorillaz, musician-producer Danger Mouse teams with rapper-musician Cee-Lo for this collection of funky grooves backing smooth R’n’B vocals.
Best of Chris Isaak, Chris Isaak
Isaak has long been known for his Roy Orbison-inspired voice and retro-cool musical stylings. This greatest hits retrospective documents his consistency of vision and appeal, including his well-known “Wicked Gameâ€Â and “Somebody’s Crying†plus three new tracks.
Other notable releases this week include: Red Hot Chili Peppers Stadium Arcadium, Grandaddy’s Just Like the Fambly Cat, and Snow Patrol’s Eyes Open. Â
