Its a big week for releases and here are a few top picks…
Will Johnson could be rock’s most prolific songwriter. He has consistently put out several albums each year under his own name and with the bands South San Gabriel and Centro-Matic. Its the last incarnation that is behind this new release, wrapping Johnson’s bittersweet lyrics in moody rock arrangements. Stream the album here.
Big Al Anderson, After Hours
The former NRBQ guitarist has found a second career as a Nashville songwriter. His songs have been recorded by everyone from Delbert McClinton to Etta James. Expect mature, well-crafted country and rock-based tunes.
Neko Case, Fox Confessor Brings the Flood The alt-country chanteuse and part-time New Pornographer returns with her first solo release since 1992. The music is solid alt-country but its Case’s tremendous voice that makes this album special.
Donald Fagen (of Steely Dan) Morph the Cat and David Gilmour, On an Island
I’m not a huge fan of either artist, but what kind of music site could we claim to be if we didn’t highlight these two releases?
James Hunter, People Gonna Talk
I’ve had a hankering from some fine rhythm and blues and this latest release from UK’s Hunter hits the spot.
I Love You but I’ve Chosen Darkness, Fear Is on Our Side
I’m not a huge fan of this Austin band’s music, just love the name.
Kris Kristofferson, This Old Road
A highly under-appreciated songwriter, Kristofferson follows the footsteps of Johnny Cash and Neil Diamond with the stripped down release that highlights his songwriting prowess.
Country classics done Van the Man style. There is a blurry line between country and soul. Van Morrison proves the point with this collection of country classics as only Van the Man can do them.
Mark Erelli, Hope and Other Casualties
You could call him the male counterpart to Neko Case — Erelli brings songs to life merely by wrapping them in his rich voice. He began his career as a folk artist but his recent releases have been country swing.
It is too soon to tell whether Matisyahu is a one-hit wonder or not, but the hassidic rapper has certainly made his mark on the reggae and alternative scenes.
Tres Chicas, Bloom Red & the Ordinary Girl
If you enjoy country and folk with beautiful three-part harmonies, this is the a keeper.
