Patty Hurst Shifter, Too Crowded on the Losind End (Evo Recordings)
The first of several anticipated releases this quarter, North Carolina’s Patty Hurst Shifter deliver solid rock and roll with a touch of the South. The band delivers some tear-stained ballads but is at its best with in-your-face rockers. (See my earlier preview here.)
Cat Power, The Greatest (Matador)
Chan Marshall, aka Cat Power, traveled to Memphis to record at the legendary Ardent Studios with members of Al Green’s original band. The results are striking and beautiful.
The Gourds, Heavy Ornamentals (Eleven Thirty)
Austin’s notorious Gourds returns with another gem. The band blends country, bluegrass, folk and a touch of rock and roll with originality and flair.
Jenny Lewis with the Watson Twins, Rabbit Fur Coat (Team Love)
The Elected, Sun, Sun, Sun (Sub Pop)
The two driving forces behind Rilo Kiley emerge with independent releases. Both build upon their collaborative efforts with quiet, personal songs.
Robert Pollard, From a Compound Eye (Merge)
Pollard established a reputation as one of rock’s most prolific songwriters, most notably with the late Guided By Voices. Evidently he is not slowing down with this latest solo release of short bursts of power pop.
The Subdudes, Behind the Levee (Back Porch)
The Subdudes deliver a fine collection of roots rock with a heavy dose of Louisiana soul. Fans of Delbert McClinton and John Hiatt will love this album.
