Streets of New York, Willie Nile
It’s hard to believe that it has been over six years since Willie last released an album. He is an American original, crafting some of the most refreshing rock anthems around. Don’t believe me? Check out the impressive list of others endorsing him on his web site.
(Expected release: February 21. Album Preview here)
The Man Who Killed Love, Will Hoge
Hailing from Nashville, Will Hoge captures the best of rock and roll — raucous guitars, straight-forward melodies, and plenty of rock rhythms. Judging from songs previewed live over the past year, this could be his strongest outing yet. Look out for “Hearts are Gonna Roll,†“Pocket Full of Change,†and the treacherous title track.
(Expected release: TBD)
Too Crowded On The Losing End, Patty Hurst Shifter
Look forward to some great rock and roll from these North Carolina boys. Their preview “Short EP†released last year features a quartet of driving rock and roll tracks, with the full length also including great cover of Neil Young’s “Mr. Soul.â€
(Expected release: January 24th. Album preview here)
A Blessing and a Curse, The Drive-By Truckers
Simply one of the best rock and roll bands in America today.
(Expected release: April. Album preview here.)
The Wee Hours Review, Roman Candle
This album has been in the making for over three years, or rather, this album has survived two record companies in the past three years. Expected to be released later this spring from V2 Records, Roman Candle plays intricate pop songs, similar to the New Pornographers, but with an organic roots quality.
(Expected release: TBD. Album preview here.)
Light ‘Em Up, The Fags
Another from the “What’s taken so long to release this album†category, the Fags are expected to drop their debut record this spring. If you like Cheap Trick, you’ll love the Fags. If you don’t like Cheap Trick, you’ll probably still like the Fags. Crunchy guitars, power pop, played loud.
(Expected release: TBD. Album preview here.)
The Animal Years, Josh Ritter
I had the opportunity to hear several impressive songs from the forthcoming album at a recent concert. Ritter is a powerful and poetic songwriter in the Dylan tradition, who improves with each release. “Thin Blue Flame,†a stirring and ambitious political track from the forthcoming release, is available for download.
(Expected release: TBD. Album preview here.)
TBD, Butch Walker
Walker’s 2004 release was my favorite album from that year and is still a staple in my cd player two years later. After a year demonstrating his talents as an engaging live performer, Walker is promising to deliver two albums in 2006. Expect more of what Walker does best: slick pop songs that include both powerful rockers and engaging ballads.
(Expected release: TBD.)
TBD, Alejandro Escovedo
Well on his way back from a two-year absence from music, Escovedo is planning to release a new album later this spring. Escovedo is a legendary Austin songwriter who has proven his ability to write in any style, from folk to country to rock. His forthcoming release, produced by John Cale (Velvet Underground), will no doubt continue Escovedo’s tradition of eclectic and rewarding releases.
(Expected release: TBD.)
