The Who Lose Custody of Song

Thursday, January 08, 2009 By Mayer Danzig

If you ever wanted to see what happens when a great song inspires and even greater performance, check out Bettye LaVette’s performance of the Who’s “Love Reign O’er Me” at the recent Kennedy Center Honors presentation to The Who. The facial expressions of Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey say it all. Sorry gentlemen, it just ain’t your song anymore.

The whole Who tribute was one for the history books. Lavette put the exclamation point on it. I agree, its her song now.

Astounding. I saw Bettye when she made a surprise appearance at a Drive By Truckers show in New York City. This Grand Dame brought the house down.

Great homage. I’m gonna remember this one.
