Album Review: Susan Tedeschi, Hope and Desire

These days we find Tedeschi busy raising her young children (I wonder if they’ll inherit her voice? No pressure!). Thankfully, she’s found the time to release a new album albeit not all the material is original. Her fourth album, Hope and Desire is a mix of original songs and remakes of classics by Ray Charles, the Rolling Stones and more. Frankly, I don’t care what she sings as long as she keeps making records. Her husband, Derek Trucks (Derek Trucks Band & Allman Brother’s Band) keeps it a family affair on three of the album’s tracks.
Among my favorites, You Got The Silver is a Stones remake. Her voice is outstanding as usual, but what really makes this song great is the incredible guitar work. On Lord Protect My Child, a Bob Dylan remake you’ll hear Tedeschi’s gospel trained vocals shine accompanied by a beautiful blues guitar. One of my favorite songs on the album is Evidence, a song about a lover getting busted for infidelity.
All being said, I prefer the remakes on this album over the original songs. It just goes to show the magical combination of classic songwriting and amazing vocals. We’ll forgive her songwriting as she’s busy these days trying to raise a family. Perhaps, she’s holding on to her more treasured work for future releases. Even still this album packs a wallop of soul and is outstanding from start to finish. It strongly benefits from the production by Joe Henry, known previously for work with Solomon Burke and Aimee Mann. Also impressive is the guitar work by Doyle Bramhall II on six-string.

Although I am not as old as Betty Crowe, I am up there in years (50). I have seen Susan 5 times in Canada and am looking forward to her trip up to the Great White North on Nov 1 in TO. I’ll be the oldest and loudest fan there at the Mod club. See you there.

I am so jealous reading yall’s comments~ Susan is not scheduled to come to Texas, so far as I can tell. I have been one of her biggest fans since 1998. This is the 1st time I can remember that she doesn’t have a single tour date in Texas. Susan~ if you read this PLEASE come to AUSTIN, TEXAS. We are in bad shape without our yearly dose of the feeling your music brings me! Still lovin’ everything you do.

The reviewer talks about prefering the remakes over the original songs on “Hope and Desire.” However, it’s a whole CD of cover songs. Not one of the 12 cuts is an original. Reviewers need to read the liner notes before writing their reviews.

Remakes revealed. Thanks, Helen, for the update. Listening to the album digitally, I did not have the liner notes available. I guess we’ll really hold our breath for the next album where Tedeschi lets loose those songs she’s been holding on to. Treat yourself to a listen on ARTISTdirect.com.

If anyone out there is debating buying this album, buy it! Susan is my favorite singer in the world, her voice can make me laugh, cry, and gives me the chills no matter how many times I listen to the same songs. I can’t wait for more material and to see her play with Derek in October!

I have been a fan of Susan’s since 1998 and was fortunate to see her live in Asheville, NC. Susan…if you read this…p l e a s e come to Greenville, SC! You are so blessed with a beautiful voice. So refreshing in this day and time. And yeah…I’m getting into the senior years myself..but never to old to rock and roll.
