Adam Hood’s 4 song EP starts off promising with the semi-rocking “Tuesday Night” in which he proclaims, “I’m always hoping for a good time/It never happens on a Tuesday night.” It’s the standout track of the disc which features mostly Edwin McCain-style vocals, acoustic guitar, bass and drums. (And if anyone would know where to find a good time on a Tuesday night it would be Hood, who spends a fair time on the road.) The second track “Million Miles,” showcases Hood’s strong pipes even more and delves into heartbreak territory. Finishing off the disc is “Coffee Song” and the funny, but predictable, “Play Something We Know” in which the singer/songwriter is accosted by bar patrons to play “some Skynard” or “something we know.”
While I’m not a huge fan of Hood’s vocal style, his delivery and honest writing does have a certain charm. The 6th Street EP shows promise from the singer/songwriter but I’d like to hear him kick it up a notch which it appears he has done on his upcoming release Different Groove. The new record, being released May 8th on Little Dog Records, was recorded with Pete Anderson, legendary Dwight Yoakam collaborator. While I doubt it will have the impact of Yoakam’s Guitars, Cadillacs, Etc., Etc., I’m sure it will turn some heads. Good luck to this “Hard Core Troubadour.”
