Tom’s Pick of the Week, Jackie Greene

press photoI’ve been waiting for Jackie Greene’s next release since I first heard Verve’s re-release of Sweet Somewhere Bound. I’m happy to say American Myth is here and it is fantastic.

This is the fourth album for Sacramento-based Greene. Many early critics labeled him a blues artist after seeing some of his live acts. He pleases those fans on the intro and then moves on to show his true range. While he certainly is blues-influenced and the Dylan comparisons are many and well warranted, on American Myth you’ll find him beginning to separate himself from his early labels. Covering Americana, Roots-Rock and Blues, these tracks were conceived while on the road in America. Says Greene, “These songs, are all intended to paint a picture of America, in sort of a non-specific way. The characters in the songs are all Americans: the waitress with the tattoo, the mayor kissing babies, the drag queen, the sailors, the socialite.” I’ve only listened to it once so far, but already I know I can count on this one burning a hole in my eardrum. In short, I highly recommend American Myth. You can preview the full CD on AOL Music.

Other notable releases for week of March 14, 2006 from:
Willie Nelson, Sean Watkins, Garrison Starr, Scott Miller & The Commonwealth, Bryan Sutton, Bonnie Bramlett, Slick Ballinger, Duke Robillard and Heartworn Highways (Various Artists)
