Now & Then: Clay Street Unit’s Sin & Squalor and the reach of The Devil Makes Three

Sunday, February 22, 2026 By Tom Osborne

The Devil Makes Three (cover art)

There’s a certain kind of roots record that doesn’t want to be reviewed so much as spilled. You know the type: beer-ring on the lyric sheet, boot-scuff on the melody, a chorus built to survive a room full of people talking over it until they suddenly aren’t.

Now & Then: Melissa Carper & Theo Lawrence’s Havin’ A Talk and the reach of Time (The Revelator)

Gillian Welch – Time (The Revalator) (cover art)

Duets are relationship counseling with better suits. Two people, one microphone, and a shared agreement to tell the truth in public as long as it rhymes. Melissa Carper and Theo Lawrence understand the assignment. Their debut duo album Havin’ A Talk leans into the oldest trick in country music: make the song a conversation, then let the conversation become the plot.

Now & Then: Natalie Del Carmen’s Pastures and the reach of Our Endless Numbered Days

Sunday, February 08, 2026 By Tom Osborne

Los Angeles is not exactly famous for quiet. It’s famous for traffic that hums in B-flat and palm trees that look like they’re always posing for a headshot. So when a 24-year-old songwriter from L.A. drops an Americana record called Pastures, the first surprise is the title. The second surprise is that it actually sounds like one: open air, creaky wood, and time moving at a human speed.

Now & Then: Sophie Gault’s UNHINGED and the shadow of Miranda Lambert’s Crazy Ex-Girlfriend

Sunday, February 01, 2026 By Tom Osborne

There’s a specific kind of record that sounds like it was cut with the venue’s back door still propped open. You can hear traffic. You can smell the bourbon. Somebody’s laughing a little too loud and nobody’s apologizing for it.

Neko Case - Fox Confessor Brings the Flood (cover art)

Some records arrive like a letter you weren’t supposed to read. You can tell it’s private because the handwriting wobbles a little, and because it tells on its author in small, unglamorous ways.
