Is there anyone out there who doesn’t know Elvis? From the early Sun Studio years to the Vegas spectacles, he blazed a distinctive trail. Dig beneath the out-sized legacy, however, and you’ll find the heart of a musician. Over the course of his career, Elvis wrapped his voice around everything from gospel to country to rock.
In June of 1970 Elvis entered RCA’s Studio B in Nashville with a crack group of musicians including guitarist James Burton. In short order they roared through a collection of country and rockabilly gems, from Ernest Tubb’s “Tomorrow Never Comes” to Bob Will’s “I Washed My Hands in Muddy Water” to Willie Nelson’s “Funny How Time Slips Away.” Throw in a raucous take on Jerry Lee Lewis’s “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On” and the collection was complete.
