Back in Austin after the demise of Rank and File, Escovedo went on to form the legendary True Believers with his brother Javier and with Jon Dee Graham. The band was a three-headed monster — each man equally impressive at both songwriting and guitar-playing. “The Believers were like a full-on rock band kind of wanting to be the Mott the Hoople of the Southwest,” reflects Escovedo.

“It was kind of like this Clash meets the Everly Brothers meets Waylon Jennings somehow,” says Alejandro Escovedo to describe his old band Rank & File. Escovedo chronicles the band in “Chip N’ Tony,” an ode to former bandmates Chip and Tony Kinman on his latest release Real Animal.

In the first of two exclusive Twangville podcasts, Escovedo reflects on the rise and fall of Rank & File and his subsequent return to Austin.

That’s right, let it burn, burn, burn. If you haven’t heard the IBWIP podcast before, it covers the best in Punktry, Psychobilly, Underground Country… whatever you wanna call it. I call it… good. While I’d love to find a way to broadcast our playlists (legally, of course), I don’t see podcasting as something we at Twangville will do in the near future. In the meantime, I wanted to share a link to some podcasts our friends over at Americanaroots.com are producing. I’ve been enjoying Ray Randall’s Random Reviews and the Americana Roots Review.
