So…it’s March and I’ve heard a good many new releases so far this year along with a number of discs that I didn’t get around to from last year. The best so far? Hands down its Mission Control from Athens, Georgia’s The Whigs. I didn’t even have this band on my radar until hearing “Right Hand on My Heart,” probably one of the best ‘get the f*#k out of your seat and rock’ songs I’ve heard in a long time. While I do often find myself saying, “What the hell is this guy singing about?” I somehow don’t seem to care. My leg still shakes, my head bobs and I find myself singing along about falling leaves or having a dream about 1,000 wives. (That’s way too many by the way.) These guys have really put together a solid record that features elements of Southern swagger, Brit-rock cocky-popiness and indie bliss. They even seem to give a little homage to the Beach Boys on the track “I Never Want to Home.” (Sloop John B) Definitely check them out if you haven’t already

"Let's see, I got to bed around 4:00 and got up at 7:30. That's all a real man needs, right? This next five minutes is gonna count though, it's what makes the difference between me sounding like an ass and sounding like a genius."

I saw these guys last week in San Antonio. They were great live. It was worth waiting until 1:30am on a Tuesday.
