Don't feel bad. We don't agree much internally, either. That's the fun of it. Probably any single ND ballot is more interesting than they are in aggregate, but that's got more to do with statistics than taste. I hope. Thanks, regardless, for reading.

ND has now posted the full lists of everyone's ballots so I think your faves got a fair bit of love, even if it didn't show up in the final count.

Ha -- well, even though I love ND too, I certainly wouldn't recommend defining your tastes against a magazine's. For some, the "best of" lists represent favorites; for others, lots of factors (trying to have a "cool' image, showing fair coverage to different types of artists, etc) play a big part in creating the lists. Since ND is a for-profit mag (though a responsible and smart one), I'd guess the latter is the case.

Plus, Jeff is right -- sometimes great artists just don't get great press. Consider Bettye LaVette and her struggle to find any audience of a respectable size here in the US.

You know what, don't feel bad. I can count lots of artists and records throughout the years I have LOVED that never gained any level of popularity or critical acclaim or both. Music is, after all, in the ear of the beholder.
