As one might imagine, I get a lot of new music sent in my direction. I like to think that I do a good job keeping up but I’m sure that others might rightfully disagree. Nonetheless, I actually take great pleasure in “discovering” a band that has been in the periphery of my radar but that I’ve never given a proper listen.
Such is the case with LA’s The Dustbowl Revival. I suppose the name was a bit of a red herring, calling to mind a Woody Guthrie-style folk acoustic ensemble. Sure, the band’s instrumentation does lean heavily on acoustic folk and bluegrass tradition. But then they throw in some horns. And some great pop songs. Put it all together and you’ve got music that radiates a good time.
Here are a few to wet your whistle. Here’s “Debtors’ Prison,” from their just released eponymous new album as well as an entertaining cover of Simon & Garfunkel’s “I Am A Rock.” For good measure I’ve also thrown in a video that they did with none other than Dick Van Dyke.
